2005 Syrah Spotlight




Laurie Daniels, esteemed wine writer chose to write about Per Bacco Cellars in a recent "Wine Picks".

SLO County syrahs are just the choice when it’s time to grill. Grilled foods and syrah are a match made in the backyard. At my house, we grill year-round, but cooking outdoors is an even more attractive proposition when the heat drives me out of the kitchen. So I find myself reaching for the syrah often at this time of year.

One good choice is the 2005 Per Bacco San Luis Obispo County Syrah ($32), from a vineyard in the southernmost part of San Luis Obispo County. The wine offers smooth, ripe blackberry fruit, along with notes of chocolate, violets and white pepper. It has decent acid to stand up to slightly fatty foods; the winery recommends butterflied leg of lamb or braised short ribs. All in all, a very easy-to-drink syrah.
